Frequently Asked Questions
What is Kinesio Tape®?
Kinesio tape is a functional taping system which is designed to increase blood flow, lymphatic drainage, correct muscle function, relieve pain and support joints. When coupled with Active Release Techniques® it helps injuries to heal faster. The tape is latex-free with acrylic adhesive and is heat activated. It is comprised of polymer elastic strands surrounded by 100% cotton fibers.
How does it work?
The tape is designed to mimic a layer of skin and is full of convolutions within the adhesive. When applied correctly, the convolutions should lift the skin, increasing space under the skin. This allows muscles slide and glide properly and for blood and lymphatic fluid to flow freely.
What is it used for?
The tape can be used for an infinite number of conditions. Its uses range from simple bruises to post-surgical rehabilitation to sprain/strains. The tape has the ability to activate and relax muscles which are overworking or underperforming. It can also be used on everyone from babies to geriatric patients.
How long can I wear the tape?
The tape can be worn for 3-5 days.
Can I still workout/do my sport with the tape?
Yes! The tape is waterproof and therefore, sweat proof. You can swim, run, bike, lift and compete in the tape. We do recommend that our patients avoid hot tubs and saunas while wearing the tape.
What is the importance of finding a certified Kinesio Taping® practitioner?
Since there are so many different uses for the tape it is important to find someone to apply the tape correctly. The success of the Kinesio Taping® Method is dependent on two factors:
- Proper evaluation
- Proper application
If the tape is not applied correctly, you are wasting your time, money and tape!
